What's the difference between APRA and RIANZ?

From what I can tell buy reading their websites they are both about royalties and stuff for playing music.

Do I have to pay both organisations a fee?
or if I pay RIANZ do I not have to pay APRA or visa versa?

APRA's contact details can be found here: http://www.apra.co.nz/enquiryform.htm

Just email one of the  Licensing Representatives and ask for a form to be sent out to you for a LPFM licenece, should cost about $200 a/yr.

Once they send out a form ( a contract between your lpfm station and APRA), fill it out and send it back. They then send out an invoice for the fee, which you then send them.

Then they loose the cheque and invoice you again, and you have to email them as to why you are being charged twice... well that's what happened to me anyway.

Hi Mark from PPNZ here....

To clarify things for you: any broadcaster requires a licence from both APRA & PPNZ. APRA collects royalties on behalf of the composition copyright owners, PPNZ collects on behalf of the sound recording copyright owners.

I believe the APRA licences are around $200 per annum. PPNZ licences are $100 + GST per annum. The PPNZ licence can be applied for online at http://www.rianz.org.nz/rianz/ppnz_radio.asp

Hope that helps. If you have any other questions, email me at mark@rianz.org.nz or phone me on DDI 09 308 0512.

Just an update to the above info:

Phonographic Performances has changed its name to PPNZ Music
Licensing
and the LPFM licensing page is located at
http://ppnz.co.nz/low-
power-fm.php

Licence fees for 2011 are $109 + GST and a further $109+GSt if you wish
to simulcast online.

Hi Niceguy,

You don't need to purchase songs and can play your friends'
collections. The only rule of thumb is don't play bootlegs
or unauthorised recordings. Other than that you can
broadcast what you wish.
